Class Details
What to Expect
No prior technical knowledge is required for this class. Students can expect to spend the majority of class time experimenting with different methods of creating collage. We will explore various adhesives, substrates and composition theories. Instead of creating one large artwork, our goal will be to create many small experiments of finished collage artworks. Class to class, expect to experiment, and try something new.
Class Timeline
This class meets every Tuesday for 4 weeks from January 17 to February 7 at 6-8 pm.
- Class 1: The conceptual basis of collage: everyday objects and materials are transformed to be and mean something else.
- Class 2: Appropriation. Appropriation refers to the practice of artists using pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original.
- Class 3: Transfer technique and composition strategies. Experiment and test ways to transfer an image to multiple surfaces while studying strategies to create compelling compositions.
- Class 4: Configure/reconfigure. Deconstruct our own work to create something new.

About the Educators
Amber Cobb is a Colorado based artist, living and working in the Denver area. Her sculptures, paintings, and drawings address the ambiguity within intimate experiences. Beginning with the body as a point of departure, she unpacks the physical and psychological responses to life’s complicated interactions through abjection, attraction, and humor. In 2011, she received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Cobb has been exhibited in a number of exhibitions both nationally and internationally. This includes xiao shan xiao at the Hunan Province Art Museum in Kaifeng, Millennial Pink at Untitled Miami, and Palettable Relations at Galeria Hilario Galgura in Mexico City, MX.

Mario Zoots received his Masters of Art from the University of Denver and has taught at Metropolitan State University and Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. In August of 2013, he participated in the Biennial of the Americas with a public artwork. Zoots’ work has been exhibited internationally since 2010 when he created an installation at the Museum of Image + Sound in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Zoots has had his work published in two books on the topic of collage, The Age of Collage: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art, and Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage, both published by Gestalten in Berlin. Currently, Zoots is the Curatorial Manager for New Collection, a project-based art collection designed to foster artist collaboration and empower creative expression. He is represented in Denver by K Contemporary and in Mexico City by Daniela Elbahara.
