Black History Tomorrow Poetry Slam
In collaboration with the University of Denver, local BIPOC students created poetry around the theme of Afrofuturism at the Denver Art Museum. They worked with local slam poets Bianca Mikahn, Panama Soweto, and Hakeem Furious to create poems rooted in reflection and response through dialogue and art centered on the meaning of “riches of freedom and the security of justice,” a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The youth took the prompt as an opportunity to imagine and depict how they would like to construct their future.
On February 24th, from 3 pm–5 pm, we will host a poetry slam to showcase this work. The event will be hosted by Hakeem Furious and will be included with general admission. The students will compete in a Poetry Slam with varying cash prizes to the top three performers.
