Overview

Sarah Sense (Choctaw/Chitimacha) creates innovative photo-weavings that comment on stereotypes in popular culture; tell stories of colonialism, resistance, and resilience; re-indigenize landscapes; and explore identity and family history. Sense cuts materials such as her own landscape photography, images of Hollywood posters, family photos, maps, and manuscripts and reassembles the imagery anew using customary basket patterning and techniques from her Chitimacha and Choctaw heritage.

Sense has travelled through the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia, inspiring her interest and research in Indigenous arts and histories internationally. She currently lives and works in California. Works by Sarah Sense are included in Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography, opening February 19, 2023.
