Stay Cool this Summer at the DAM

4. Get to know artists.

Meet the talented artists in Her Brush: Japanese Women Artists from the Fong-Johnstone Collection, on view through July 16. This exhibition shines a light on Japanese female artists of the fifteenth-eighteenth centuries. Collect different artist slips throughout the exhibition to take home and make your very own artist slip all about you!

5. Create a lacquer box.

Korean lacquer boxes are special works of art on display on level 5 of the Martin Building. Look closely to get inspired and then make your own box and decorate it with metallic pencils.

6. Weave away the day.

Head up to the Thread Studio on level 6 of the Martin Building and hang out with textiles. Weave on a giant loom or practice different knots on your own tiny grid that you can take home.

7. Take in the views.

Look out at the stunning mountain vistas from the rooftop of the Martin Building. Explore the terraces and see out into the distance for miles.

8. Finally, get revved up.

There’s a new exhibition opening July 9 called Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion. Take in how artists use cars and skateboards to express themselves and their culture. Design your own low rider paper car and take it for a spin on a model of Federal Blvd. And try your hand at finger skateboarding at a miniature skate park.

With so much to do at the museum, you can visit lots of times and escape the heat. Everything on view at the museum this summer is free for visitors 18 and under, thanks to our Free for Kids program.
