Designer Norma Kamali is invincible… and amazing, inspiring, creative, and kind. According to her, being invincible is a work in progress. She and I spoke via Zoom about creativity, the future of the impact of fashion, and ageing with power.
I Am Invincible is Norma Kamali’s new book, it reflects her thoughts on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. She shares her thoughts on lessons learned by decade with recommendations for ageing with power. She defines the importance of sleep, diet, and exercise, which she believes have contributed to her healthy, energized life at 75.
I didn't care if I was the most famous or the richest designer. I wanted total freedom to live a creative life.
Kamali started designing clothes in the late 1960s and launched the brand Norma Kamali OMO in 1978. Her ideas about comfortable, wearable fashion felt especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, with New Yorkers breaking out their Sleeping Bag Coats to dine outdoors.
In addition to a studied healthy lifestyle, Kamali takes the advice of one of her teachers to be “true to yourself.”
The book, skincare products, t-shirts, and a representation of iconic Norma Kamali designs including the famous Sleeping Bag Coat are available in the Shop at the DAM during Paris to Hollywood: The Fashion and Influence of Véronique and Gregory Peck (on view through July 18, 2021).
