Play on the Plaza
Free First Saturday at the Denver Art Museum is on July 7 and there’s lots to do without even entering the museum! Love to make art? Stop by the special summer Create-n-Take outside on the plaza. Head to the bright green trailer to try out “Photo Finish,” from 11 am–3 pm. Experiment with surprising techniques and unexpected materials to make your own customized photographs.
You’re also welcome to relax and rock on the musical chairs of the outside art installation, La Musidora.
Also, head inside the museum on Free First Saturday to listen to the stories behind the objects at the bilingual program Cuentos del Arte. Stories are at 11:30 am and 1 pm.
Create and Construct at Create-n-Takes
Take a break from the heat and head into the exhibition, Jeffrey Gibson: Like a Hammer—the first major museum exhibition of the artist’s work—artworks include text-based wall hangings, a selection of beaded punching bags, painted works on rawhide and canvas, and video. While you’re there, construct a project inspired by Jeffery Gibson’s art at the Carry Me Close Create-n-Take.
Beginning July 23, we ask the question, how do sculptures move and stand still at the same time? Explore this idea by looking at horse sculptures and make your own horse at the new Create-n-Take, Hold Your Horses on level 4.
Meet up with Friends
Create Playdate returns with hands-on activities for kids ages 3–5 and their adults. Join us on July 11, from 10 am–2 pm (extended summer hours!) as we create mixed media miniature clothing to add to your creative closet.
Discover New Territory
Use a special decoder camera to explore the upcoming exhibition New Territory: Landscape Photography Today. Pick up a camera with a red lens and hunt for labels with hidden messages. Read the question, take a guess, and look through the special lens to see the answer! Learn surprising details about the photographs—and the photographers—as you go.
Don’t Feed the Art
Stampede: Animals in Art is just waiting for families to visit this summer. See how animals have captivated artists throughout history. This exhibition brings together more than 300 objects from the Denver Art Museum’s collection to explore the presence of animals in art throughout centuries and across cultures.
