Assessing the Varnish on Monet's Fishing Boats

In preparation for Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature, senior paintings conservator Pam Skiles and DAM director Christoph Heinrich look at the varnish on Monet's Fishing Boats. Impressionists, including Monet, preferred matte finishes on their paintings, but art dealers often thought a matte painting looked unfinished. Watch this video to learn more about some of the considerations that go into conserving paintings like Waterloo Bridge and Fishing Boats.

See both paintings and about 120 others in Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature (October 21, 2019-February 2, 2020).
