The World War II-Era Provenance Research Project
Following the American Alliance of Museums' (AAM) release of the Standards Regarding the Unlawful Appropriation of Objects During the Nazi Era, found on its Collections Stewardship web page, the DAM is conducting research to identify artworks that were created before 1946, and acquired after 1932, and that changed hands in continental Europe during 1933-1945.
The list is being updated as research progresses and items are posted on our website as well as on the Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal, a registry of objects in museum collections in the United States that changed ownership in Continental Europe during the Nazi Era (1933-1945). The portal was the result of a collaboration between the American Association of Museums (AAM) and the American Association of Museum Directors (AAMD), of which DAM is an active member.
We will be listing works here that have or may have changed hands in Europe during the Nazi Era. Their inclusion does not mean we believe the works were looted or improperly acquired. The gaps in their history are being researched and we will post any new findings as they become available.
