Dr. Christopher Beekman, associate professor of anthropology at University of Colorado Denver, speaks on the artwork of pre-Columbian western Mexico, which is still treated as either idyllic representations of everyday life or as depictions of a widespread shamanism, spirituality without gods. Beekman contends that 1940s interpretations may be more accurate, and notes that there are numerous symbolic references to rulership and its basis in control over nature. Current archaeological work is supportive of this perspective.
