DNC Week at the DAM

Come celebrate the 2008 Democratic National Convention with us August 25–29! A variety of events are scheduled in the downtown area during the week of convention. Please keep the following in mind when planning your visit.

 

DAM Events

 

Target Free Day

Monday, August 25, 10 am–5 pm

The Denver Art Museum will be free all day to visitors. Sponsored by Target.

Friday, August 29, 6–10 pm

Pose with your favorite candidate—Obama or McCain, create your own political button, canvass the galleries with red or blue, display your flag pin (free for the first 100 visitors), and enjoy the musical stylings of singer-songwriter Nina Storey!

 

Get Out the Vote

Through the summer

The Denver Art Museum and AIGA, the professional association for design, will showcase digital posters for the Get Out the Vote campaign in honor of the 2008 Democratic National Convention! The display is made possible in partnership with Accenture, the Denver Art Museum's Technology Partner.

 

Civic Center Park Events

 

Parades by various groups, including Recreate 68, will be staged each morning on Bannock Street between Colfax and 14th Avenue. The parades, held daily from 11 am to 3 pm, will focus on a different topic each day:

 

Sunday, August 24: End Foreign Occupation
Monday, August 25: Free Political Prisoners
Tuesday, August 26: Immigration Rights (begins in Viking Park, not Civic Center Park)
Wednesday, August 27: Environmental Rights
Thursday, August 28: Civil Rights

 

Civic Center Park will also host events and activities from 10 am through 11 pm throughout the week.

 
Closures

 

Palettes restaurant will be closed Monday–Wednesday, August 25–27. Novo Coffee and Mad Greens will also be closed on August 27.

 

Our North Entrance will close at 3 pm on Sunday, August 24, and Tuesday, August 26. Visitors will be asked to enter and exit through the main entrance.

 

The entire North Building, including Duncan Pavilion, will be unavailable after noon on Wednesday, August 27. However, the Hamilton Building will remain open until 5 pm.


There will be no Nooner Tour on Wednesday, August 27.

 

DNC Road Closures

 

The Colorado Department of Transportation has announced that Thursday, August 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m. I-25 will be closed from its interchange with I-70 to the interchange with 6th Avenue. This 5 1/2 mile-long closure of I-25 will affect traffic in both directions during the INVESCO Field speech and will remain closed until the conclusion of the event.

 

Recommended routes to Downtown:

 

From northbound I-25, Lincoln Street and Santa Fe Drives are the preferred routes; other routes include Colorado or University Blvd. to 13th Avenue, Colfax Avenue or 17th Avenue, Downing Street, 6th Avenue East to Santa Fe Drive or Lincoln Street.

 

To access southbound I-25 from Downtown Denver, use Kalamath Street to Santa Fe Drive, Broadway - York Street/University Blvd. - Corona Street/Downing Street. 

 

To access northbound I-25 from downtown, Park Avenue West is the preferred route - 20th Street - Brighton Blvd. to I-70 - Speer Blvd. (but only during the designated hours of the I-25 closure).

 

Parking & Transportation

 

The Cultural Complex Garage at 12th Avenue and Bannock is the most convenient place to park. Availability may be limited during the convention. We recommend that you use public transportation to visit the museum. For more information on bus and light rail routes, visit www.rtd-denver.com.
