As part of its ongoing lecture series, the Clyfford Still Museum will feature a talk on the late artist by guest speaker David Moos, curator of contemporary art, Art Gallery of Ontario.
A contemporary of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, Still is often credited as the forerunner of the abstract expressionist movement and considered to be one of the 20th century's most important and prolific artists. However, by the 1950s he distanced himself from galleries, featuring his work in only a handful of exhibitions. Upon his death in 1980 the vast majority of Still’s 2,400 pieces were sealed from the public.
The Clyfford Still Museum will unveil 94 percent of Still’s works when the museum opens in 2010. The vast collection will showcase 825 paintings, 1,575 works on paper, three sculptures, and various photographs, letters, and sketchbooks.
