The Denver Art Museum (DAM) announced today that it will present the exhibition Figure to Field: Mark Rothko in the 1940s, June 23–September 29, 2013. Figure to Field highlights the artistic evolution of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century by showcasing works created in the critical decade of his formative development. Drawn primarily from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.—the largest repository of Rothko’s work anywhere in the world—the exhibition includes many paintings, drawings and watercolors rarely seen before.

Originally created for the Denver Art Museum’s (DAM) site-specific exhibition Embrace!, Charles Sandison’s Chamber is again on view on level two of the Hamilton Building. The video installation uses computer-generated projections of light in dazzling fashion. In an otherwise dark room, multi-colored projections form words, symbols and abstract imagery dance across the raw surfaces of the walls. The Scottish artist’s paradoxical work employs 21st-century technology to evoke primal feelings of wonder and awe. Visitors can experience Chamber through April 14.

Get ready for one of the most impressive wine-tasting events in Colorado, DAM Uncorked. The 13th annual fundraiser will take place the second weekend in April at the Denver Art Museum (DAM). Whether a seasoned sommelier or a curious novice, wine lovers will not want to miss the chance to taste more than 300 wines during the Wine Tasting on Friday, April 12. The DAM Uncorked Dinner & Auction on Saturday, April 13, includes silent and live auctions and a seated dinner.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) will present a new body of work by renowned contemporary artist Nick Cave in Nick Cave: Sojourn, on view June 9–September 22, 2013. Taking visitors on a journey through the artist’s imagination, the exhibition will feature approximately 40 new artworks including more than 20 new Soundsuits. Cave’s multi-sensory, immersive installation will transport visitors to a magical world of color, texture, sound and movement. It will be a ticketed exhibition, free for DAM members.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) announced today that J. Landis (Lanny) Martin has been elected to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees effective January 16, 2013. He will succeed Frederic C. Hamilton who has been a leader on the Board for nearly three decades. Hamilton will become Chairman Emeritus and focus on planning for a potential new staff office building next to the museum campus, among other projects. Martin’s election as Chairman follows an 18-month run as co-chairman with Hamilton.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) announced today a suite of three French-themed shows titled Passport to Paris that will anchor its fall 2013 exhibition schedule. On view October 27, 2013–February 9, 2014, the trio of shows will focus on French art from the late 1600s to early 1900s, and explore changes in art and society during three important centuries in art history. Revealing how art mirrors society, guests will get a sense of the changes that took place from the time of the powerful and absolute monarchy of Louis XIV to the individualistic café society.

During these overnight timeslots, museum access is limited to the Becoming Van Gogh galleries only.

Due to high demand, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is adding additional timeslots for Becoming Van Gogh during the final weeks of the exhibition. Visitors can explore the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition until 9 p.m. most nights, on New Year’s Eve and Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until midnight during the final three days. DAM members also have the special opportunity to view the exhibition during select Monday afternoons in January.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) takes a wide-ranging look at textiles from pre-Columbian weavings to Navajo blankets to an examination of clothing in art and photography in the campus-wide exhibition Spun: Adventures in Textiles, on view May 19–September 22, 2013. The museum-wide show is in celebration of the DAM’s new textile art galleries, which also will be unveiled on May 19.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced that the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The DAM is recommended for a $50,000 grant to support an artist-in-residence program for the native arts department in 2013. The program will enliven the American Indian art gallery while also showcasing a key permanent collection of the DAM.

Visitors can explore the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition until 9 p.m. most nights. DAM members also have the special opportunity to view the exhibition during select Monday afternoons in December and January.
