This chest for grooming accessories and hair ornaments is called chagae pitchop, which means “comb chest” in Korean.
The lid has a brass prop that is engraved with the Buddhist incantation “Hail to the jewel in the lotus!” in Sanskrit characters.
Widely used in all sects of Korean Buddhism, the phrase was recited as a prayer for good fortune in veneration of Kwanum, the Korean name for the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion.
