“Kandissi” sofa, Alessandro Mendini and “Le Strutture Tremano” table, Ettore Sottsass

Beginning in the 1960s, Italian designers gained international prominence for their distinctive flair and bravura in everything from automobiles to fashion. Many of these designers looked to the fine arts as a model and elevated beauty above other design concerns.

The table by Ettore Sottsass and the sofa by Alessandro Mendini are radical examples of Italian design from the late 1970s.
