far back in time, Herbert Bayer
Born in Austria in 1900, Herbert Bayer came to artistic maturity at the Bauhaus in Germany, where the emphasis was on integrated design that broke down boundaries between so-called “fine” and “applied” art. Although Bayer is well known for his achievements in design, he called painting “the continuous link connecting the various facets of my work.” Throughout his career he moved between highly structured, Bauhaus-inspired styles and freely expressive styles founded in nature and the cosmos, like the painting here.
After brief periods in Berlin and New York, Bayer settled in Aspen, Colorado, in 1946 and made his home there until the mid-1970s. Bayer (along with his wife, Joella) gave the museum the largest public collection of his work anywhere—photographs, posters, paintings, and sculptures, as well as examples of graphic design, typography, environmental design, and more. The Herbert Bayer Collection and Archive now numbers around 8,000 works plus documentary materials.
