Even utilitarian objects like beds, pillows, cradle covers, and tipi bags are decorated with beads to enhance their beauty. The mat is made of willow slats that are fastened together with sinew.
"I wanted to highlight the natural setting of these
objects with the autumn sun reflecting directly on them."
––Gordon Yellowman, Cheyenne chief and
curator of Cheyenne Visions II
Early versions of cradleboards, soft cradles sheltered babies from
the weather and provided privacy for the nursing mothers. This cradle
appears to be made from the recycled curtain or wall shield of a tipi––a
Cheyenne woman would not waste such material. |
Tipi bags were used to store and carry personal items. Unlike the
flat tipi bags made by other Plains Indians, Cheyenne tipi bags fold
out to form a box when filled. All tipi furnishings, including tipi
bags and pillows, are made and embroidered by members of a Cheyenne
women's guild. |
