The Southwest Asia Gallery features art from the Anatolian and Arabian peninsulas, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asia. Objects representing the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia include a cuneiform tablet and a relief from an Assyrian palace. Islam is the predominant religion of the region, and copies of the Qur’an, prayer rugs, and other Islamic objects are shown, like a begging bowl used by a Sufi holy man. In addition, look for illustrated manuscripts, calligraphy, metalwork, ceramics, architectural elements, and textiles—a barber’s apron, carpets, and a flat-woven rug (kilim).
