Jar

Jar
Thailand, Surin Province, Khmer period, 1000s-1200s
stoneware with brown glaze, 3 1/2 inches (8.7 cm) high

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. James Frasche
1983.237

Surin Province in lower Northeastern Thailand was once part of the great Khmer empire based at Angkor in present-day Cambodia. The excavation of a number of Khmer kilns in the area indicates that this was a manufacturing center for Khmer brown glazed stoneware, of which this small jar is a fine example. Its compressed globular shape and narrow mouth suggest that it was used for the storage of a liquid, probably oil or honey.
