Located in Northeast Asia, the Korean peninsula separates the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. The Korea Gallery features paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, metalwork, furniture, and household furnishings, including a woman’s comb chest with Buddhist inscription. Decorated with Buddhist symbols, flowers, and insects, it may have belonged to a member of the royal family. Paintings of tigers are especially popular in Korea. They provided homes with symbolic protection for the New Year. Examples of Korean art are also on view in the Buddhist Art Gallery and the Scholar’s Tradition Gallery.
