Japan is a nation of islands situated off the coast of Asia in the Pacific Ocean. In the Japan Gallery, you will find painted scrolls and screens, lacquerware utensils for food and drink, bamboo baskets, and a samurai warrior’s suit of armor. Among the wide variety of ceramics on view is a porcelain vase decorated with over a hundred ceramic vessels. The painting collection includes a pair of screens by Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), depicting a group of Japanese poets at play. Japanese objects are also shown in the Buddhist Art Gallery and the Scholar’s Tradition Gallery.
