Originating in India some 2,500 years ago, Buddhism spread to Central Asia, Nepal, Tibet, China, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, and several countries in Southeast Asia. Drawn from a wide geographic area, the objects in the Buddhist Art Gallery reflect a religious tradition that expresses itself in painting, sculpture, religious texts, and ritual objects. In addition to images of the Buddha and Buddhist deities, the gallery includes idealized portraits of Buddhist priests and teachers. Among the objects on display are a Chinese sculpture of Guanyin and a Japanese painting of the Western Paradise of Amida Buddha.
